I recently received several Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate MSDN subscriptions. As an MVP and MCT I have subscriptions to both MSDN and TechNet and hope to spread the wealth. I wish to give away 2 free subscriptions to anyone who will put it to good and frequent use. Comment on this post on what you would do with this subscription and how it would help you, and others, as well as an email address, and I will post the winners on August 1st.
Just an fyi, with 21 years in public service I would love to read how this would help those help others in their blog, public forums, etc.
David, first off thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI am a programmer/dba (conflicting combo I know) for the City of Greeley here in Colorado.
Right now (as you probably know firsthand) cities are slashing their budgets. Training, software, and travel are the first to go.
Having an MSDN subscription would help me to bring new ideas of what's possible to my job and ultimately to our community.
There are several projects this year that are stalled out because of limited budget: Migrating to Sharepoint 2010, clusterting our SQL Servers, and developing Gov2.0/ASP.NET webapps that work with mobile devices are just some of the things I'd like to accomplish this year. An MSDN subscription would help greatly to those ends.
On a personal note I have recently caught the blogging bug and am looking to give back to the community in that way as well (zero1design.com).
Thank you for the consideration.

ReplyDeleteMSDN would provide me with the tools to create some Management Studio Addins for SQL 2008.
ReplyDeleteI'd aim to publish them on codeplex for the community.
I love the graphical monitoring tools, so my ideal project would be creating a free one (they are expensive). It would enable me to use my dba knowledge at the same time as learning new development skills.
There are several areas that i could provide tools for - 2008's compression features and resource governor could do with interfaces / helpers as could partitioning functionality.
Personally I've been a DBA for seven years now and would love the tools to get stuck into some development.

David,
ReplyDeleteHaving the subscription would provide access to the development tools to help with development projects and software issues with the folks in my area, many of whom like myself work in the government sector or closely with the goverment. Working in the government sector usually means very limited no a complete lack of access to new versions of development software .due to tight budgets and organizational constraints.
Cheers,
Trevor

David:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the offer. I could really use this right now. On the same day Lehman Brothers bankrupted in September 2008, I was laid off from my position as a .Net software developer. First time in 31 years I am not professionally developing software. Unfortunately, in order to keep my home I had to rent it and move to another state where I now live in a small converted building behind my parents home. It is also unfortunate that software jobs are rather rare in this area. In fact, most jobs are somewhat rare. However, due to several circumstances I cannot relocate as easily as I did 31 years ago. Therefore I am temporarily working in a field that has nothing to do with computers and I find that my skills are slowly degrading. An MSDN subscription would be of tremendous value in helping me to stay up on current technology.
Thank you for the opportunity regardless of your decision.

David,
ReplyDeleteI am a poor developer from India who just got recently laid off. I have a family of 5 to support. I have a .Net developer for the past 5 years. I have my side projects(for which I use trial version). The subscription would help me in getting a job and continuing my side projects( The source code of which I would release). My email id is kamathprashanth@yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteI am a DBA who is working on passing my MCTS/MCITP examinations. The MSDN subscription would give me the opportunity to setup a test lab where I can study for the certification examinations along with improving my skills in HA/DR along with learning new skills such as Service Broker and BI.
ReplyDeleteI have been a consumer of the SQL Server community reading a number of different SQL Server blog and forum sites for a number of years. I want to start contributing to the SQL Server community by starting a blog site and presenting at my local PASS user group and at SQLSaturday events. I have started giving presentations at my local PASS user group and SQL Saturday. With the MSDN subscription, I could create a test lab where I can learn and prepare for future presentations along creating ideas to share on a blog site. I would also like to use the MSDN subscription to learn more about SQL Azure, and then as I learn about the cloud technology, I would blog about it, to share what I have learned. That way other people can learn from my experience.
In today’s environment, I believe the SQL Server community is a very important resource that needs people who will contribute to it. I would use the MSDN subscripts to contribute to the community.
Thanks for the opportunity,
Paul

Hi, It would help me a lot as I could only afford the studio license sans the MSDN, I contribute a lot to people getting started in various blogs and sites such as stack overflow. MSDN will help me keep up to date and provide me with more learning opportunities to help others. Good to see you are giving away what you are not going to use and letting it go to waste.. cheers mate, Damian (damian.haynes@gmail.com)
